Mobile User Interactive Components

Mobile Polling

An application that performs real time voting based on SMS text messaging. Multiple choice questions can be created dynamically and on screen graph of the results displaye.

Location/Mapping Component

The Location and Mapping Component allows mobile users to register their current geographic location on the Mobile MUSE Platform by sending a simple text message or by making a voice call.  Event hosts can use the L&M component to define a set of landmarks specific to their needs, and assign each landmark a unique code and a geographic location.  These codes can then be displayed (on publicly-visible signs near each landmark for example) so that mobile users can text in that code to indicate their location at that landmark.  Alternatively, mobile users can make a voice call to specify their location by uttering the name of that landmark. This location information may be useful to add geographic context to cultural events.  Besides allowing end users to specify their locations directly, the L&M component provides an API that allows cultural developers to update and retrieve location information programmatically. In that way cultural developers can integrate geographic functionality into their programs and events.

Livecast (Mobile Streaming Video)

Lets you stream live video from your phone to anyone connected to the Web. It can be viewed live or later on-demand. Embed tags are readily available for each live event, so you can easily host Livecast streams on your own website. This application can broaden the reach of your event to include people who can't attend in person, but want to join the experience in real-time. And because Livecast works on mobile phones, you can incorporate members of the community to join in making the broadcast.

Raw Materials

RawMaterials is a downloadable application for Mac OSX, that collects social media (images, videos, text messages) from the MUSE platform, and caches them on a user's local machine. Information about the downloaded material is sent via OpenSoundControl (OSC), allowing other processes to make use of the content as it arrives. Live video streams are also maintained by the application, providing a computer with a generous amount of user-generated material for a particular event. The vision for this system is that an artist's computer can be endowed with rich media content shared from the public at large, in real time as an event occurs. For example, a video jockey (VJ) can mix in new images/videos of the audience, or a video wall can be created to display all publicly-generated content. A multitude of performances and installations can be created where an artistic interpretation can be applied to the raw materials supplied by the public.

Big Screen Components

Display URL

This widget simply displays a URL obtained from a user. There is an option to show who made the request, and another option to set how long before another user request is fetched. Methods of interaction are SMS and mobile web browser.

Image Search

Search Flickr for photos using your mobile on a public display! A user can send in a search tag using a web browser, sending SMS, or by calling in, and the results will be displayed by the widget on a public display. Users will also have the ability to select a photo and have it dowloaded to their phone.

Message Board

A simple public message board that displays messages sent by a mobile device. Messages can be sent using a web browser, SMS, or by calling in. Customizable settings allow the message board to be customized to fit your display.

Multimedia Board

Allow users to share messages, videos, pictures, etc. Users can send in media files using MMS or SMS. Another way of interaction is using the mobile web browser or by calling in. One of the great feature is that users can download the pictures, videos, etc. by sending a request by SMS or by web browser.

Public Display

This is a scheduler widget. There are two methods to trigger between different widget instances or other web pages. One is by a timer which rotates between webpages, and the other is by events received. This is useful if more than two widgets instances are needed in one browser.

UBC Directions

Use Google Maps to get directions using your mobile on public displays at UBC. People can enter their desired start and end location, and the directions will be displayed. Also, the step by step instructions of how to get from one place to another will be sent to the users' mobile device. Interact by using a web browser, SMS or using voice.

Administration Components

Distribution List

The Distribution List Application allows you to define, build and manage lists based on users' mobile phone numbers. Distribution List works in conjunction with Mobile Dialog and Mobile Engage to build your customer information profile using mobile services.

Mobile Campaign Manager

The essence of a Mobile Campaign is that the business has a single message that it wishes to convey to a group of customers. Customers may then ostensibly respond to that message either directly to the business or via an SMS reply to the campaign itself.

Mobile Dialog

The Mobile Dialog allows application developers to simply create applications that rely on inbound messaging from mobile users to access those applications. The Mobile Dialog component provides simple parsing rules to enable developers to specify both static and dynamic data to be sent back in response to messages. Content sent in response to received messages can be SMS, MMS, or downloaded content types such as ringtones, images and videos.

Mobile Engage

The Mobile Engage component allows the web site owner to easily provide a mechanism that will allow arbitrary text or multi-media content to be delivered directly to their customers mobile phones. Through menus or wizards, the Mobile Concierge is custom configured by the web site owner to define an unlimited number of objects both text and multimedia types. The configuration wizard then generates a small snippet of HTML code, which the web site owners can then place on their own web site. The resultant HTML code is easily and seamlessly integrated into the owner's web site yet leverages the power of the Mobile Muse Platform to connect the owner's web site and its content with their mobile customers.

SIFT Tool Aggregator

The Sift Tool is used to auto-provision a channel of feeds that are aggregated to a central RSS feed. Feeds included by default are Flickr, Twitter, and Youtube. Additionally, this component also accepts SMS messages which are also added to the central RSS feed based on the defined Service Point. SIFT enables you to collect social media about an event (e.g. a Nordic World Cup race) or some topic of interest (e.g. the iPhone in Canada) into a channel. The channel's combined RSS feed or one of the channel's sub-feeds for text, photos and videos can then be displayed and manipulated and processed by the myriad of tools that process RSS feeds.

Web to Mobile Content Extractor

"Web to Mobile Content Extractor (WMCE) is a service that consists of a small plugin for your Internet Explorer. With the addition of this plugin, you will enable a new context menu in your browser that will enable whatever content you're currently viewing in your browser, to be sent to your mobile device. WMCE currently works on all image types. In the future it will be expanded to include other media types include video and audio. WMCE takes care of all the content adaptation worries required to ensure the selected content works on your phone.
